Jesuit Mission Volunteers:
A year of volunteering with the world’s poor
Jesuit Mission Volunteers (JMV) is an initiative of the German Jesuits in collaboration with social projects and institutions of the Jesuit Order in Latin America, Africa and Asia.
The mission of the Jesuits is to serve in global solidarity with the poor, and includes the struggle for faith and justice, promoting the cultures of different peoples, and inter-religious dialogue. Jesuit Mission Volunteers (JMV) allows women and men to be a part of this mission of solidarity and hope through voluntary service.
As volunteers, women and men with professional training share their time and energy with the poor. The volunteers live and work with them for a year, are enriched by them and learn to lead a simple lifestyle just like them. The field of work corresponds to the skills that the volunteers possess.
For example, a physiotherapist was placed in Argentina to work with physically-challenged youth. In Sudan, an architect helps construct a school. As a social worker, a volunteer works with AIDS orphans in Zimbabwe. A music teacher teaches music to the children in the Himalayas. The possibilites with the JMV are as innumberable as the projects facilitated by the German Jesuitenmission office.
Why? The Struggle for Justice
Women and men are struggling for worldwide solidarity and justice. Through JMV, they gain a personal experience of the living conditions of the poor, and insight into structural injustice. This experience can lead to a deepening of reflection and faith experience, and can open the volunteers to a better understanding of other cultures and religions. On return, they play a key role in the work towards a more united world.
Who? People for Others
Young people and the young at heart can volunteer through JMV. The opportunity and challenge is extended to all.
Where? Worldwide!
JMVs work with selected Jesuit projects in Africa, Asia and Latin America. As far as possible, the choice of project will match the professional qualifications and other talents of the volunteers to project needs.
How long?
A year is the minimum duration of stay and work with the possibility of an extension for another year.
